CORONAVIRUS SCAM ALERT

The following is extracted from the West Yorkshire Trading Standards Newsletter giving information on fraudsters and scams linked to the Coronavirus pandemic. Please take a couple of minutes to read as it could save you money.

Beware of phishing emails asking for NHS Donations, containing malicious attachments or links. Phishing emails regarding medical advice to protect yourself against Covid-19 or purporting to be from employers, malicious links attached to email which may download malicious software.

Stay protected online: Make sure your laptop or computer has up to date anti-virus software installed.

West Yorkshire Trading Standards has seen an increase in the number of COVID-19 related scams, such as the following:

  1. Phishing emails asking for NHS Donations, containing malicious attachments or links.
  2. Phishing emails regarding medical advice to protect yourself against Covid-19 or purporting to be from employers, malicious links attached to email which may download malicious software.
  3. Job Scams- Internet adverts on social media for employment opportunities for key worker positions, adverts asking for an upfront fee for vetting checks to be carried out.
  4. Fake holiday refund websites being created and advertised on Social Media.
  5. Doorstep callers purporting to be from Age UK, with clipboards offering to carry out shopping for elderly residents. Asking for card details upfront.
  6. Doorstep callers offering to ‘disinfect’ gardens for older people – whilst the offending took place outside of WY, the perpetrators live in the County.
  7. Miracle Cure Scams- Claims Chinese herbal medicine is being used to treat Covid 19 infected patients in China with ‘very good results’.
